Natural Ways to Ease Pregnancy Aches and Pains

If you've caught yourself groaning like an old floorboard every time you stand up from the couch, welcome to pregnancy, where your body seems to ache in places you didn't know could ache. The lower back. The hips. That weird pain down the side of your belly when you roll over in bed. It's a lot, and it's relentless in a way nobody quite prepares you for.

The good news is you're not destined to just white-knuckle it through nine months. There's a fair bit you can do to take the edge off, safely. Let's go through it properly, area by area.

Why does pregnancy make everything ache?

A hormone called relaxin is largely to thank (or blame) here. It loosens your ligaments and joints to help your body prepare for birth, which is brilliant for delivery day but less brilliant for your lower back and pelvis in the meantime, since everything is that little bit less stable than usual.

On top of that, your centre of gravity is shifting as your belly grows, your posture changes to compensate, and you're carrying more weight than your body is used to. It's a lot of change in a short amount of time, and aches are often just your body adjusting, not a sign anything is wrong.

Lower back and hip pain

This is the big one for most mums. A few things genuinely help: swapping heels for supportive flat shoes, being mindful of your posture when standing for long periods, and sleeping with a pillow between your knees to keep your hips aligned.

Heat is your friend here too. A warm bath, a heat pack on your lower back, or a slow, gentle massage with a nourishing oil can ease tension in tight muscles. Some mums find a pregnancy support belt genuinely useful for long days on their feet, worth asking your midwife or physio about if the ache is persistent.

Swollen legs, tired feet and leg cramps

By evening, especially in the third trimester, your legs and feet can feel like they've done a full day's work even if you've barely left the house. Swelling and cramps are common as your circulation works harder and your body holds a bit more fluid than usual.

Putting your feet up whenever you get the chance genuinely helps, as does staying hydrated (counterintuitive, but true, dehydration can make swelling worse). Magnesium is worth asking your midwife about too, some mums find it helps with night-time leg cramps specifically. A warm foot soak in the evening is one of the simplest ways to give tired legs a proper break.

Headaches and general tension

Headaches in pregnancy are often down to hydration, blood sugar dips, or plain old tiredness (fair enough, given everything your body is doing). Drinking more water than feels necessary, eating regularly rather than skipping meals, and getting good sleep where you can all make a real difference.

A cool cloth on your forehead, a quiet dark room for twenty minutes, or some gentle neck and shoulder stretches can help too. If headaches are frequent, severe, or come with vision changes or swelling, mention it to your midwife or GP promptly, as this can sometimes be a sign of something that needs checking.

A gentle reminder

I think so many of us push through these little aches because we assume that's just what pregnancy is meant to feel like. Some discomfort is completely normal, but you're also allowed to seek relief for it. You don't need to earn your comfort by suffering through it first.

Practical tips for easing pregnancy aches

  1. Swap heels for supportive flats where you can, especially on days you're on your feet a lot.
  2. Sleep with a pillow between your knees to help keep your hips and lower back aligned overnight.
  3. Put your feet up for ten minutes whenever the opportunity comes up, rather than waiting for the end of the day.
  4. Stay ahead of dehydration, it can worsen both headaches and swelling.
  5. Try a warm foot soak or gentle massage in the evening to help your body properly wind down.
  6. Mention persistent or severe pain to your midwife or GP, particularly anything sudden, one-sided, or accompanied by swelling, vision changes or fever.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to have aches and pains throughout pregnancy?
Yes, mild to moderate aches, especially in the back, hips and legs, are common as your body adjusts to carrying extra weight and to the hormone relaxin loosening your joints.

What can I safely take for pain relief during pregnancy?
Always check with your midwife or GP before taking any pain relief during pregnancy, as not everything that's safe outside pregnancy is safe during it. They can advise what's appropriate for you.

Why do my legs cramp at night during pregnancy?
Night-time leg cramps are common in pregnancy and may be related to circulation changes and mineral levels. Staying hydrated, gentle stretching before bed, and asking your midwife about magnesium can help.

When should I worry about pregnancy pain?
Sudden, severe, or one-sided pain, or pain accompanied by fever, swelling, vision changes or reduced baby movements, should always be checked promptly by your midwife or GP.

Can massage help with pregnancy aches?
Gentle massage, particularly on the lower back, hips and legs, can help ease muscle tension. Use a pregnancy-safe oil and avoid deep pressure on the abdomen.
