How to Prepare Your Postpartum Care Kit Before Baby Arrives

How to Prepare Your Postpartum Care Kit Before Baby Arrives

Somewhere in the third trimester, most of us pour every ounce of energy into the baby.

The tiny singlets get washed and folded. The nappies are stacked. The car seat is fitted and checked twice. And then, somehow, there's nothing left over for the person who's about to do the hardest physical work of her life.

You.

Here's a gentle reminder, mama: while everyone is getting ready for the baby, someone needs to get ready for you. And the best person to do that quietly, in advance, is you.

Preparing a little postpartum care kit before baby arrives is one of the kindest things you can do for your future self. Because in those first raw, tender, beautiful days, you will not have the energy to go looking for what you need. You'll want it already there, waiting.

Let's put it together.

Why prepare before baby comes?

The fourth trimester arrives all at once. One day you're pregnant, and the next you're recovering, feeding around the clock and running on almost no sleep.

In that fog, small comforts matter enormously. But nobody has the capacity to online-shop for perineal spray at 3am with a newborn on their chest.

Having your recovery essentials packed and ready, ideally by around 36 weeks, means that when you come home, everything you need is within reach. It's the difference between scrambling and simply resting. And rest is exactly what your healing body is asking for.

The essentials for your body's recovery

Whether you have a vaginal birth or a caesarean, your body needs real, practical care in those first weeks. These are the things worth having ready.

  1. Peri bottle. A gentle spray bottle for keeping things clean without the sting of wiping. Genuinely one of the most loved postpartum items there is.
  2. Maternity pads. Plenty of them, more than you think. Heavy-duty and soft. Bleeding after birth is normal for several weeks, so stock up generously.
  3. High-waisted underwear. Soft, full-coverage and forgiving. If you've had a caesarean, high-waisted styles that sit above the incision line are a must.
  4. Cooling and soothing perineal care. Cooling sprays or pads bring real relief to a tender perineum in the early days.
  5. Nipple balm. If you're planning to breastfeed, tender or dry nipples are common in the first weeks. A simple, gentle balm is a bag-friendly comfort.
  6. Comfortable, loose clothing. Soft layers you can feed and move in easily. Nothing that presses on a sore tummy or incision.
  7. A magnesium foot soak. More on this one below, because it's a small ritual that gives back far more than it asks.

Don't forget the comfort

Recovery isn't only physical. Those early days ask a lot of your heart too, and the small comforts are what carry you through.

Pack the things that make you feel human. A cosy blanket that's just yours. The snacks you actually love, within arm's reach of wherever you feed. A water bottle you can drink from one-handed. A playlist or a few saved meditations for the quiet night feeds.

And a little something that's purely for you. Not functional. Just lovely.

One ritual so many new mums come back to is a warm magnesium foot soak. When you finally get ten minutes, sinking your tired, swollen feet into warm water is a way of saying to your body: I see how hard you've worked. Magnesium can support relaxation and ease that bone-deep tiredness, and it's a rare moment in the fourth trimester that's entirely yours.

The bits that make life easier

A few practical things that aren't about your body, but will save your sanity.

Prepare some easy, one-handed food. Fill the freezer with meals you can reheat, or accept every single offer of a home-cooked dinner. Keep a phone charger with a long cord near your main feeding spot. Have a notepad or app ready to jot down feed times if that helps you feel on top of things.

And write yourself a short list of who to call. Your midwife, your GP, your maternal child health nurse, and one or two people who will show up without needing to be entertained.

If you'd rather not build it from scratch

Pulling all of this together while heavily pregnant is a lot. If the thought feels overwhelming, or if someone keeps asking what you'd actually like as a gift, a ready-made postpartum kit takes the whole task off your plate.

Our Postpartum Essentials Gift is curated for exactly this season. Everything inside is chosen to help you recover, rest and feel genuinely cared for, so the hardest part (remembering to look after yourself) is already done.

Frequently asked questions

When should I prepare my postpartum care kit?
Aim to have it ready by around 36 weeks. Babies don't always follow the plan, so having your recovery essentials packed a few weeks before your due date means you're covered even if things start early.

What are the most important postpartum recovery items?
A peri bottle, plenty of maternity pads, soft high-waisted underwear, soothing perineal care and comfortable clothing cover the basics. Add a nipple balm if you're breastfeeding, and a few comfort items just for you.

How long does postpartum recovery take?
Everyone is different. Bleeding often continues for a few weeks, and full healing can take six weeks or longer, especially after a caesarean. Be gentle with yourself and follow your care team's guidance.

Is a magnesium foot soak safe after birth?
An Epsom salt foot soak is generally a lovely, low-fuss way to relax postpartum. As with anything, check with your midwife or GP if you have any concerns or specific health conditions.

What should I put in a postpartum gift for a new mum?
Think comfort and recovery: soothing self-care, something soft to wear, nourishing snacks and a genuinely restful treat like a foot soak. A ready-made postpartum kit takes the guesswork out of it.
